It had been a while now since the Bora had made itself felt properly at the Barcolana, and perhaps the most famous wind in the Adriatic had decided that the wait had gone on too long. All weekend the Bora blew over Trieste, determined not to miss the rendezvous with the legendary Autumn Cup, with such intensity that organizers were forced to keep the smaller boats entered in the Barcolana from going out to sea.
The start of the Barcolana
For all the others, the start was given on time, under Bora gusts that were already well over 30 knots. The duel at the head of the fleet was immediately between the two maxis most credited for the final victory, Gasper Vincec’s Way of Life and Furio Benussi’s Arca. The frontrunners took the lead after the start, setting off down to the first mark at over 25 knots of speed, followed shortly by Arca. Then the unforeseen technical snag: Way of Life’s mainsail halyard giving way, Ark taking the lead in the race, despite the opponent not letting up and getting right back on his heels.

As the duel at the top became tense, the rest of the fleet was being tested by the Bora, which meanwhile increased to over 40 knots, with gusts to 45. Unfortunately, a few trees came down and there were dozens of breakdowns, but fortunately without any consequences for people. The organizing committee, registering the increase in wind and with worsening forecasts, decided at one point to cancel the regatta from class 2 onward, effectively saving only that of the larger boats, which, however, saw their course reduced to Buoy 3 in front of Miramare Castle. In the end, “only” 126 arrived at the finish line, but the decision was helpful in allowing the fleet a quicker return to port before weather conditions deteriorated further.
In the lead the duel was won by Arca, which preceded a never tame Way of Life; third place was Maxi Jena with Milos Radonjic at the helm. Fourth place for Adriatic Europa: DuÅ¡an Puh literally flew a 60-footer. The fifth runner-up is Alberto and Claudia Rossi’s Woodpecker Cube, first in the cruise class.
“A very challenging regatta for the teams at sea and the organizers ,” said SVBG President Mitja Gialuz. in which the Race Committee made justifiably conservative sporting decisions-which responded first and foremost to safety needs-both early in the morning, excluding the smaller categories, and during the race, canceling the race for hulls from class 2 onward with the goal of speeding their return to the ports. In this context, the security arrangements worked very well in the face of a dozen situations that required prompt intervention at sea. I would like to thank the Harbor Master’s Office, all law enforcement agencies and the volunteers of the organization for their great work. I thank the competitors for racing with full awareness of the weather conditions“.
