reverse gearNow we can say we have seen them all. After the announcements of Matt Kent’s venture (the Atlantic on a 1.06-meter boat) and Italy’s Dario Noseda (the lone transatlantic in Star), it is this morning’s news, reported by the Polish newspaper ryba.pl, according to which three friends, aboard a small cabin cruiser (now called a minialtura), would be planning the Atlantic crossing in … reverse sailing.

LOCAL CELEBRITIES

You got it right, in reverse. Wassilji Peshowsky, Dariusz Chernya and Christof Murenskji, three friends from Rydzewo on Lake Niegocin, would be training hard (as the photo above shows) for the feat.

“They are local celebrities,” reads Ryba, “Peshowsky and his friends had this idea for a long time, think that at the national mini-ocean championships they even ran a reverse sailing trial. And they didn’t even close last! Finally a sponsor, who designs gearboxes for automobiles and smelled the ‘business’ of reverse gearing, believed in them.”

ON A REVERSE METEOR

On a small Meteor (christened “Backfish”) they will depart, presumably around mid-November, from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the direction of Cape Verde. From here the crossing to Saint Lucia (Caribbean). Almost 3,000 miles in reverse sailing!

The boat will be dotted with action-cams to document that everything happens, indeed, in reverse sailing. “We will have to hope that the trade wind is constant. If it rotates northward,” Chernya explained, “we’ll end up having to set course for the Brazilian coast, if it rotates southward we might end up in the Carolinas!”

The boom may be secured to the shrouds with a restraint, but the three have already let it be known that they will take turns to hold it manually, while one crew member will be at the helm. Complete fools!
