Fancy sailing in the cold, in harsh and wild seas, but in complete safety? L’Ocean Cruising Club has organized a truly inspiring rally, open to both members and outsiders: the Arctic Rally will start in June this year and will see participants engaged along the Norwegian coast to the Lofoten Islands in the Arctic Circle.
RALLY PHILOSOPHY: TRIPS, EXCURSIONS, TRADITIONAL FISHING COURSES
Departing from Bergen (Norway) on June 6 and then traveling 600 miles to Lofoten: it will not be the competitive spirit that will drive the event, but the desire to experience an adventure all together, in pure rally spirit. Crews will be free to stop, change routes and timings. There will be some stops, along the route, where events will be organized: guided tours to historical sites, excursions, traditional Norwegian fishing courses. Weather permitting, the event will touch some of the ancient fishing villages that nowadays are inhabited only in the warm season by the descendants of the families who settled there in the distant past.
THE MIDNIGHT SUN
Departing June 6 from Bergen, participating crews should be able to reach the Arctic Circle in time to see the midnight sun (near summer, due to the tilt of the earth’s axis of rotation, at latitudes above 66°33′ the sun never dips below the horizon, and therefore night never falls). Have we intrigued you? Forward your application to Jan Isaksen, the port officer for Bergen of the Ocean Cruising Club, by writing to jan@sy-jenny.no or to OCC secretary Rachelle Turk: secretary@oceancruisingclub.org
