Luke has been on board the Sailing Newspaper since its inception in 1975.
The Journal of Sailing turns 45 and celebrates it with you in this special issue. I asked myself, but didn’t you get tired of being on the board of this newspaper after all this time? The answer is NO, and I will explain why.
When my father told me that I had to go and help close the first issue of the Sailing Newspaper at the printer’s, forty-five years ago, I blurted out, “But Dad, I have my high school graduation exam in a few days, how can I do that?” “You can do it,” was his lapidary reply. So, in the morning I would prepare for my high school graduation as a private student (I carried two years in one because instead of being a student in the previous three years I had been a sailor on our boat); from the afternoon to late evening I would move to a basement in the Milan suburbs to birth the first issue of the Journal of Sailing.
For the record, I passed my high school graduation and the first issue of the Journal of Sailing came out on time at the newsstand. It was 1975, I was nineteen years old. Today, forty-five years later, I am still here aboard the Sailing Newspaper, which with this issue celebrates this milestone of longevity that in the publishing world is not taken for granted. I became an adult, mature and old man by always staying on board this newspaper.
I have asked myself many times whether I was right to remain loyal over these 45 years to the Sailing Newspaper: “Didn’t you get tired of doing the same thing for forty-five years?” The answer has always been the same: NO.
I can summarize why I will never get tired of talking, writing, and sailing by using what my father wrote in the first issue of the Giornale della Vela in 1975, when he wondered why he had decided to start a newspaper that talked only about sailing in Italy. Thus he confessed, “I realized that sailing was a therapeutic escape without being a way to escape and escape, but to verify, to reflect, to decide. To feel free men.”
Here is the secret to the longevity of me, the Sailing Newspaper and the entire community that follows us for so long through paper and website pages, digital perusal, newsletters, social, and everything that technology now allows us to spread the passion for sailing.
How can I have grown tired of dealing with sailing when I listen to the passionate account of Luca Bassani, who in this issue gave us a confessional interview that we publish from page 126. Or when through 45 memorable photos published by the Giornale della Vela, Luigi Magliari traces the history of sailing, year by year, from page 84.
Not to mention the review of the 45 covers chosen from the 502 so far published, which can be found from page 69. Boats change, the way we go, horizons broaden, but the passion for sailing never dies. That is why after 45 years I am still not tired of being on board the Sailing Newspaper. And, I am sure, you will also remain on board with us for a long time to come.
