Philippe Briand developed the concept of this superyacht (which is not yet destined for an owner), a 300-footer named SY300, from one idea: it should not be a motor yacht with sails, but exactly the opposite. Briand, who is a whiz at developing sporting designs, not only those inclined to cruising but also those that are decidedly performance-oriented, developed his idea by approaching it as he would on decidedly smaller boats, those where precisely everything starts with sailing and the engine is only an aid. But there is more.

The very wealthy owners who can aspire to a boat like this, according to Briand, are varying their tastes, moving away from the style and consumption pattern of large motor superyachts and developing a different sensibility. Therefore, one of the focuses of SY300 is onenergy autonomy and low environmental impact. A series of turbines located below the waterline will be used to generate power for all onboard systems and to recharge the batteries.

Driven by the pursuit of efficiency rather than opting for a fashionable design, Philippe Briand chose a conventional two-masted rig on a hull with an inverted bow, as this proves to be the most effective for boats of this size. With its foremast towering 95.3 meters above the waterline, the SY300’s upwind sail area is 3,560m2 while at the leads it is 6,600m2 including 3,500m2 of gennaker. The design of the carbon fiber masts and rigging is heavily influenced by Philippe Briand’s experience gained during the development and construction of the 67-meter S/Y Vertigo and 73-meter S/Y Sybaris, two of the most celebrated sailboats in recent history.

The data sheet and details of the project are not yet known.
