That’s why all the “big boys” in sailing choose these low-friction propellers

All propellers are not the same. Choosing a “top” product means better sailing in the immediate term and savings in the long run: less friction when sailing, more efficiency (and therefore less fuel consumption) in both forward and reverse gears, less maintenance costs.

WHAT PROPELLERS DO THE “OCEAN MONSTERS” USE?

While it is true that the racing world marks the way by developing technologies that then propagate into the world of yachting, those who choose Danish Gori folding paddle propellers for their cruising boat are on the safe side.

The most “pulled” model, the Racing Propeller (available in eight versions with diameters from 375 mm, excellent for a 30-footer, to 750 mm, ideal for maxis), was the choice for about 70 percent of the IMOCA 60 fleet (the Vendée Globe solo round-the-world boats): among them the “flying monsters” Charal by Jérémie Beyou and Hugo Boss by renowned sailor Alex Thomson.

We also find Gori propellers on the “record-breaking” multihulls of the Ultime class(Francis Joyon’s IDEC, Armel Le Clea’h’s Banque Populaire, Francois Gabart‘s MACIF just to name a few), and on Giovanni Soldini’s Gitana 17 and Maserati foiling maxi trimaran.

OFFSHORE AND MONOTYPE

More “normal” (but winning) boats, such as Bellissima, the 2019 ORC (offshore) world champion Italia 11.98, also mounts the Racing model. The world of one-design classes, or classes that involve a box rule, is “dotted” with Gori propellers: they installed it more than 50 percent of the TP 52 fleet (including Luna Rossa), the ClubSwan 50s and Swan 45s (by class rule), the Melges IC 37s, the new one-design L30 that will be 99 percent Olympic class and is offered as standard on Jeanneau’s offshore-cruiser SunFast 3300.

THE RIGHT PROPELLER FOR YOUR CRUISE

This great success has been brought about by the Danish company’s continuous research work, including “crazy and desperate” studies to improve propeller efficiency and continuous tests carried out with top sailors. And without too much publicity or sensational announcements. This “modus” operandi is obviously also transferred to the folding models dedicated to cruising, with 2, 3 and 4 blades, which are offered as standard by prestigious shipyards such as Cantiere del Pardo, Solaris, Mylius and Italia Yachts.

Gori was the first manufacturer, in 1975, to design and produce a two-blade synchronized folding propeller: in 1990 the Racing propeller line was born, in 1994 the 3-blade propeller was introduced, and it is still considered by many to be one of the most efficient sailboat designs: the folding propeller operates with the same pitch in forward and reverse (the blades rotate 180 degrees).

TWO BLADES, ONE MORE KNOT

Gori’s two-bladed range is from 292 up to 457 mm diameter, for both shaftline and saildrive transmissions, for engines up to 60 horsepower. The 2-blade folding propeller reduces the total hydrodynamic drag of the boat by 35%, and this also leads to gaining one knot of sailing speed.

THE “SECRET” OF 3- AND 4-BLADE PROPELLERS

The three-blade versions range from 381 to 762 mm, the four-blade versions are available from 584 to 813 mm in diameter: both have the additional function “overdrive”, which allows those who are helming to choose pitch and propeller profile simply by acting on the “throttle,” without the use of vulnerable hydraulic systems or complicated mechanical devices.

The operation is simple. For example, when shifting from “overdrive” to normal forward gear, the shifter and throttle control is set in neutral, which allows the propeller to fold. Then the shift and throttle control is set forward again.

The function is very useful when motor boating in calm sea conditions or when using the sailing engine because it gives the same speed at lower rpm: less noise, vibration and wasted fuel.

If you have to choose a Gori propeller, you are helped by a program available on the Italian importer’s website, with which you will quickly calculate the right model for your boat, once you have selected the 2,3 or 4-blade model.
