This time we talk about powerboating. Unfortunately, let us add. A terrible accident occurred last night in Venice during a record attempt on the Venice-Montecarlo route. Among the victims is the famous powerboat racer, Fabio Buzzi, holder of numerous records and one of the most successful designers of high-performance boats.
A piece of Italian boating history dies at 76. In the crash, in addition to Fabio Buzzi, two other British pilots lost their lives. Aboard the boat was another experienced pilot, Mario Invernizzi, who was seriously injured and was transported to the hospital but is apparently not in life-threatening danger
The dynamics
According to initial information reported by firefighters, the offshore hull reportedly crashed into the San Nicoletto dam in Lunata. The incident, in dense darkness, reportedly occurred in front on the ‘lunata,’ an artificial dam made of large boulders lowered to the seabed built to protect the Mose works, south of the San Nicolò del Lido dam.
The powerful boat, some 20 meters long and with engines allowing top speeds of 70 knots (about 130 km/h), had left Monte Carlo yesterday morning around 11 a.m. and was attempting to break the crossing record. By the time she crashed she was near the finish line at the Lido.
