“URGENT $10,000 REWARD FOR RECOVERY.
Unfortunately, we had to abandon our yacht DOVE II 460 miles east of Antigua on 12/21/16. Now we are trying to find out where it is with the hope of recovery and thus carrying on our adventure. It should now be drifting toward the islands. I ask people to stay alert and report any sightings to me or the coast guard. Many thanks, James.”
A Jan. 6 report states: “Following this course, the boat could be near the N shores of the Virgin Islands, PuertoRico probably within 2-3 weeks. Information should be sent to: https://westerlyadventures.wordpress.com
WHAT HAPPENED
A British family consisting of father mother and two young children on Dec. 21 had to abandon their boat, a Discovery 67 called Dove II, while sailing to the Caribbean. They were about 500 miles from Antigua in the Atlantic Sea, the cause of abandonment being the destruction of the rudder during a gale. Recovered by the Coast Guard after abandoning their boat on a life raft, they are now hunting for their boat to recover it since, aside from the damage to the government, the boat should be intact.
THE POLEMICY.
Once the post with the $10,000 reward to the person who finds the over 17-meter boat was launched, a web controversy ensued: “too little $10,000,” many messages said. In fact, if you find the boat abandoned with no one on board drifting, the person who takes possession of it by the law of navigation is entitled to up to 30 percent of the boat’s value. The estimated value of Discovery 67 is over $350,000!
