And in the end, the kiwis are the first to go into the water. It looked as if the first launch might be Luna Rossa‘s, but in the end Team Prada opted for a “tactical” delay and Team New Zealand is the first to sendAC 75, the super foiler with which the next America’s Cup will be raced, into the water. The announcement was made by the Kiwis with a succinct facebook post, “The Spies are about to become very busy,” with the ironic reference to what observers from the other teams traveling to New Zealand will have to do in the coming weeks.
Forget, erase, any ideas you may have about the concept of a monohull. This is yes a mono, but it is also a boat never seen before. A 75-footer that will take off like a small Moth, both upwind and downwind, with top speeds likely to reach 50 knots. A 75-footer with no keel, but with two ballasted and steerable foils and a semi-stiff mainsail. At the bow a small jib, and at the carriers a sail like Code Zero but ultramagra as a profile, to be used only in very light winds, otherwise you will sail with only the jib.
The stated ambition is to show real match racing anyway, with an upwind start and a classic countdown.
