We were expecting him at the last Festival de la Plaisance in Cannes, but instead he did not appear. We are talking about the Tava’E 535, a fifteen-footer from French shipyard Metal Yacht Composite that will undoubtedly cause discussion but remains shrouded in mystery.
Why? Because the Tava’E 535, a fast cruising boat with a hull built of aluminum and carbon superstructures, hides not one, but two hydraulically powered canting keels under the water surface. A choice that can be explained by the manufacturers’ desire to reduce the wetted area and at the same time increase the rectifying moment without having to mount ballasts. Canting keel management is automated through a hydraulic power unit. When still in the roadstead, the two “keels” can be raised bringing the draft to only 1.10 meters.
Other innovations include the two retractable electric pods, which retract into the hull when sailing under sail. They will be powered by a system of solar panels and a generator set. It is not only an ecological issue, but also a performance issue, because the different weights (genset, batteries…) will be shaft-foot.
