ice52Not even 11,000 pounds of displacement for the new “race” version of the ICE 52 currently under construction. The new ICE 52 RS is a “bad” version of the Felci studio’s design that already has six examples under construction, just a few months after being introduced to the market. The operation is the same as has always been done in the automotive field where ultra-high performance versions are added to “normal” versions.

IMG_3717IMG_3719But how do you save nearly 2,000 pounds in a boat while maintaining the comfort of a cruising boat? Working on details. Dozens and dozens of elements are being lightened on the 52 RS, thanks to the support of a Spanish America’s Cup expert who joined the yard’s technical managers Enrico Malingri, Roberto Marchesi production and carpentry director, and Paolo Ferrari composites manager (pictured above).

Already, because it is a skillful use of carbon and composites that saves weight without it showing. Thus the furniture timbers and decks are lightened with composite core, the mainsails become carbon, the mast and rigging also carbon, of the Hall Spar and without steering wheels.

Also, the use of lithium batteries and the adoption of a fin made of Weldox steel with high mechanical properties and a numerically controlled milled lead torpedo, which offer the advantage of reducing the ballast weight and thus the total displacement of the boat in percentages with the same righting moment. On deck instead of traditional heavy teak, an elegant color of anti-skid or, alternatively, ultralight teak.

These two thousand pounds less, by mainly lightening the weights at the extremities and concentrating them down in the middle of the boat, significantly improve sailing performance, both upwind and at carrying gaits. Not to mention the motor cruising speed, which is estimated at 9.2 miles per hour.

The result is a high-performance boat that can also perform well in top-level regattas without losing any of its characteristics as a comfortable and safe cruising boat. Those at ICE are not even hiding the price, 689,000 euros. VAT excluded of course.
