BeleariaAre you vacationing in the Tyrrhenian Sea with your boat this summer? Mark your calendar that on August 20 in Porto Rafael in Sardinia, next to Palau, there will be the VELA Cup Summer along with the Formenton Trophy. Two events that come together because they share the same spirit: to entertain and engage boats and sailors of all sizes and types on the water. Without tedious bureaucracy. After the success of Santa Margherita with 206 boats at the start, we thought of immediately setting another summer event with the same VELA Cup formula: viz. a regatta for everyone, where all you have to do to participate is register by declaring the length of the boat, in total relaxation even together with the whole family and with the sole purpose of spending a different day of your vacation. But not only that. The VELA Cup Summer is also a unique opportunity to sail in the midst of the Maddalena archipelago, a sailing paradise and one of the most fascinating places in the world for sailors, thanks to our partnership with the Formenton Trophy, which has been held in the midst of these crystal-clear waters since 1989.

A REGatta THAT IS FIRST OF ALL A GREAT PARTY.
The spirit of the VELA Cup moves from Liguria to Sardinia without losing its essence: A celebration at sea that aims to involve every type of boat from small cabin cruisers to thirty-meter superyachts, from the great champions of the sailing world to simple enthusiasts who want to experience the thrill of a start or a turnaround for the first time. There is room for everyone from the ultra-comfortable cruising boat to the ultimate superacer. Speaking of skill, the crew who just wants to have fun engages with those who, on the other hand, care about passing first at the buoy. The only thing that matters is that all sailors at sea recognize themselves in their passion. But the party does not end on the water, at the end of the regatta we all move ashore to the seashore for the awards ceremony where there will be prizes for almost everyone, music and a rich banquet with food and cocktails.

Port Rafael, Barrettini leaving the island of La Maddalena to starboard. From Barrettini, one sails between Budelli to Spargi until leaving Spargiotto on the left, and then goes to turn first the buoy placed near Punta Paganetto and then the one in Porto Pollo Bay, usually frequented by dozens of colorful and very fast windsurfers and kitesurfers. From Porto Pollo we head for the island of Spargi, leaving the Cala Corsara meda to starboard to finally arrive back at Porto Rafael after about 21 miles. This is the dream course: when does it happen again for you to sail in total safety, thanks to the on-water assistance of the event organization, slaloming between these islands? So if you are cruising between Corsica and Sardinia, but also if you are further away (extend your cruise!), the date to mark in your diary and on your chartplotter, we repeat once again, is for August 20 in Porto Rafael: a hundred or so boats, of all sizes and types, will converge in northern Sardinia for the big party, without the need for any special organization, but simply meeting there.

SAILING CUP’S WINNING FORMULA AWAY TO SARDINIA
So this year the Formenton Trophy is also VELA Cup, with the goal of allowing all boats to participate, from charters to those owners who are used to using the boat only for vacation. Simplifying regatta registration as much as possible, boats with tonnage certificates will participate as every year in the Formenton Trophy whose rankings will be drawn up with compensated times, but they will also automatically be entered, along with all other boats without certificates, in the VELA Cup Summer, whose rankings will instead be drawn up in real time dividing the participants into two categories: regatta for the most fierce (with spinnaker and gennaker) and cruising for the more relaxed (with white sails). Each category is then divided into classes according to the length of the boat. Signing up is then very easy: just visit www.velacup.it, the one at www.trofeoformenton.it, or finalize your registration directly in Porto Rafael by 6 p.m. on August 19.We look forward to seeing you in large numbers for this unforgettable sail!
