After the Caprera event on August 26 (you can register here, there is still time), a legendary leg of the TAG Heuer VELA Cup awaits you for September. It takes place in an equally mythical place: Lerici, Sept. 13-15 with the epicenter of the event on Saturday, Sept. 14, when the sailing regatta and evening celebration and awards ceremony takes place in the town’s main square. The Gulf of La Spezia is not only one of the most beautiful places in Italy, but also one of the most beloved stretches of water for sailors. A gulf, the Gulf of the Poets, that is incredibly protected where there are no waves, where the wind hardly ever fails, where the islands act as buoys.

The sailing event is organized by us at the Giornale della Vela together with the historic Circolo Erix, together with president Carlo Stefanini, member Roberto Bagnoli with the help of the “guru” of Gulf regattas, Attilio Cozzani. With the support of the City of Lerici, which immediately believed in our initiative.
Why will it be legendary? Carlo and Roberto tell us about it: “The Gulf of Poets is a legendary location where in a large basin that could accommodate the entire center of Milan. In the Gulf in September there are very favorable weather effects: often the tramontana, a land breeze, lingers throughout the morning, and in the afternoon the mistral shows up with increasing intensity.” – Stefanini explains – “It can be said that the September race course could guarantee very enjoyable wind conditions and in absolute safety sailing between the islands of Tino and Palmaria.”
It will be a privilege to sail from one side and the other of the gulf, all the way to the two magnificent islands of Palmaria and Tino. As for moorings, for those arriving by boat from outside, we and our friends at Erix have studied various options, all of which are convenient and close by.
But on land, too, this leg of the TAG Heuer Vela Cup will be legendary. The municipality has granted us the use of Lerici’s main square, Piazza Garibaldi, in the heart of the old town, overlooking the sea, surrounded by delightful venues. Here will be the base where we will set up a village with operators’ booths, event areas and where there will be the reference point for all participants. This is where the meeting will take place before Saturday night’s awards ceremony, which, I assure you, will tell you more about the state of our Mediterranean Sea and the behaviors we need to take to help save it.
And then, the night of the TAG Heuer Vela Cup, also legendary, will start in the square: the party with award ceremony. We have already optioned prizes for almost everyone, delicious food, satisfying drinks, and the right music for everyone. Mark your calendars, see you in Lerici from Friday, September 13 to Sunday, September 15. Because summer is not over there yet.
