On Aug. 26, the TAG Heuer VELA Cup in Caprera will not only be a grand celebration of Caribbean-style sailing in a wild and unspoiled paradise, with sailing, beach games, food, drinks and music: will also be an opportunity to say “no” to plastic and learn all the tricks to become a real ecomariner. We explain why.

THE CVC AND MEDPLASTIC
Meanwhile, it is organized in collaboration with Centro Velico Caprera, which is one of the first entities to have adopted a “plastic-free” policy: you won’t find an ounce of single-use plastic at Italy’s most famous sailing school. Then, VELA Cup partners include. Medplastic, the association created by the Giornale della Vela and Barche a Motore to safeguard the Mediterranean: all participants will be asked to sign the Ecomarinaio Manifesto, which contains all the tips for zero-impact sailing and becoming “active” plastic hunters. In addition, the TAG Heuer VELA Cup’s rich bags will feature two gadgets that will help the cause: the Medplastic eco-coaster and an eco-plastic cigarette holder.

THE EVENT “HOW TO BECOME AN ECOMARINER”
And that’s not all: after the pre-sailing briefing (scheduled for August 25 at 6 p.m.) there will be a meeting titled “How to become Ecomarinaires” that promises to be very interesting indeed: it will start with an account of the “Navigation & Environment” course devised by the Centro Velico Caprera (a special course where together with a CVC instructor the students will be able to count on the presence of a biologist on board and will collect water samples to understand the health of the sea); then, with the friends of One Ocean Foundation (present with a booth on the beach at Porto Palma) and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, will talk about eco behaviors and the Charta Smeralda, the document they designed to protect the sea. Then it will be the turn of Medplastic ‘s Ecomarinaio Manifesto and the experience of a plastic hunter, Valeria Serra, who has long been engaged in plastic collection in the Maddalena archipelago.

THE NEXT DAY ALL HUNTING FOR PLASTIC
And that’s not all: the day after the regatta, August 27, those who want to can take part in the first edition of “Hunting Plastic.” The rendezvous is at La Conigliera at 9 a.m., where a team competition to collect beached plastics will take place, with rich prizes up for grabs (info at weblue.org).
