OnSaturday, Sept. 24 at 1:30 p.m., 44 boats gathered at the starting line positioned in front of Porto Venere to participate in the TAG Heuer VELA Cup Mariperman Trophy. For the first time, the formula of the VELA Cup, our sailing event that welcomes all types of boats even those without a tonnage certificate, has come to La Spezia to join the 29th edition of the legendary Mariperman Trophy in Le Grazie, thanks to the invaluable hospitality of the Navy and the La Spezia Port Authority.
Winning the line honors of this September edition of the TAG Heuer VELA Cup was Adele Chiroli’s Grand Soleil 56 Emotions, a veteran of our event
which wasjust minutes ahead of Tommaso Oriani’s Rodman 42 Cheyenne, overall winner in the regatta category.
A beautiful coastal course within the Gulf of Poets saw registered boats cross the starting line at 1:30 p.m. in a southwest wind around ten knots. Passing the Torre Scuola in front of Palmaria Island on the right, the participants proceeded upwind to Tino Island to turn around the meda positioned and east of Tino and continue sideways to the fourth buoy, the last of the course before crossing the finish line still in front of Porto Venere, after suffering an air drop right in the middle of the Gulf.
At7 p.m. the awards ceremony was held in the beautiful little square in Le Grazie, decorated for the occasion with colorful flags and lights to warm the atmosphere by the sea. Admiral Claudio Morellato director of CSSN and Sailing Newspaper editor Luca Oriani took the stage to award all winners. Here are all the rankings of the VELA Cup.
