TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year, 22,000 votes! Who goes fast and who takes risks

The first week of the TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year, the Italian sailing oscar awarded since 1991 by Giornale della Vela, ended with an impressive 22,000 votes. (Cover photo: Martina Orsini)

The rankings, especially as far as the top positions are concerned, are well established, but the 30 most voted for among the 100 candidates on the list are the ones who pass the round: you have until 12 noon on March 15 to vote for your favorites by assigning three preferences (by voting you will receive a coupon entitling you to a 20 percent discount on your subscription to the Journal of Sailing, take advantage of it!).

WHO GOES FAST, WHO TAKES RISKS

Leading the top vote-getters is a three-way challenge: navigator Elio Somaschini (1441 votes), Hobie Cat 16 youth Italian champions Nicola Abimbola and Ludovica Festino (1430 votes), and kiter Alice Ruggiu (1361 votes). He is followed, a couple of hundred votes behind, by Andrea Barbera (who circumnavigated Sicily in a 5-meter uninhabitable catamaran), ahead of the PoliTo Sailing Team.

In 30th place, the last to qualify for the next stage, Giuseppe Bicocche and Bianca Del Bimbo, with 284 votes: the challenge is wide open.

HOW TO VOTE.

The challenge is still long, very long, the first round of voting will close on March 15, 2020 at 12 noon. As a reminder, the 30 top-rated candidates move on to the next stage: you can cast a maximum of three votes per stage in support of your favorite candidates. For security and authentication purposes, you will be asked to enter your e-mail inbox before voting: you will then have to enter a simple “captcha” (the security code to distinguish between humans and bots). At the beginning of each new phase, the votes received by candidates will not accumulate but will be reset. The principle of “cumulability” will only apply to the awarding of the “Most Voted” prize.
