We have already told you how the 29th TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year, the most prestigious award in Italian sailing, expands and changes format this year. We bring you the big players in sailing at home for thirteen days, from May 26 (when the first introductory episode will air on this website and all our socials) to June 7. It’s time to get into the details of the schedule and reveal to you who the protagonists will be, how to follow the interviews with the ten finalists of the Sailor of the Year and the Evening of Champions (in which you will find out who won), what will happen during these magnificent 13 days of sailing.

TAG HEUER 2020 SAILOR OF THE YEAR, THE DETAILED SCHEDULE

MAY 26, 5 P.M. – THE INTRODUCTORY EPISODE
It will start on Tuesday, May 26, with a big introductory episode in which we will tell you on video, on all our channels (website, youtube, Facebook, Instagram) everything you need to know about the TAG Heuer 2020 Sailor of the Year. Who got the most votes in the early stages, what the prizes are, how the jury will choose the winners: we will do it with the well-known sports journalist Mino Taveri, with our “sidekick” Bacci Del Buono, with the editor of the Sailing Newspaper. Luca Oriani e Roberto Beccari, Managing Director LVMH Watch & Jewerly Italy and General Manager TAG Heuer.

marco gradoniMAY 27, 5 PM – INTERVIEW WITH MARCO GRADONI
The first of the Sailor of the Year finalists to be interviewed by Mino Taveri and Bacci Del Buono is Marco Gradoni. Marco Gradoni is 16 years old but has already made history. The athlete from the Roman sailing club “Tognazzi Marine Village,” has won the world title in the Optimist youth class three times in a row, the last in 2019, the only one in the world to have succeeded in this feat, which also earned him the “World sailor of the year” award. What is surprising in this young man, a native of Fano and Roman by adoption, is his maturity and mental approach. Impossible for the audience not to support him until the final! The video interview will be aired on all our channels (website, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram).

MAY 28, 5 P.M. – INTERVIEW WITH CATERINA DEGLI UBERTI AND GIULIA ANCILLOTTI
On May 28 it will be the turn of the “girls flying in Hobie Cat. A true masterstroke from Caterina Degli Uberti (CdV Roma) and Giulia Ancillotti (CV Dervio), class of 1991, who took a fine bronze medal in 2019 at the Women’s Hobie 16 World Championship on Captiva Island in Florida. The Hobie Cat never goes out of style…The video interview will be aired on all our channels (website, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram).

Patrizio Bertelli

MAY 29, 5 P.M. – INTERVIEW WITH PATRIZIO BERTELLI
Not to be missed on May 29: the interview with Patrizio Bertelli. He is on his sixth America’s Cup challenge, and his name is inextricably linked to that of Luna Rossa. It is his fault that in 2000 millions of Italians spent sleepless nights watching the Louis Vuitton Cup finals and then the final showdown with New Zealand. And it is thanks to him that Italy still dreams, after 20 years, of the mythical “jug”: that’s why he took so many votes in the online stages! That for the Cup is a “magnificent obsession” of his, and we will be told why! The video interview will be aired on all our channels (website, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram).

MAY 30, 5 P.M. – INTERVIEW WITH ELIO SOMASCHINI
We are sure you will have fun with him. The story of the 70-year-old navigator and physicist born in Seregno (Monza Brianza) and raised in Brazil is incredible: on his First 40.7 Crapun has been around the world 20 years, without instruments, using his hand as a sextant to determine latitude and a watch for longitude. If you have an innate desire to sail, you can succeed even without technological tools: all you need is a good, well-equipped boat, a good sailor and … a hand. Popular in Brazil, he was overvoted by winning the second phase. The video interview will be aired on all our channels (website, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram).

MAY 31, 5 p.m. – INTERVIEW WITH FABRIZIO OLMI AND DAVIDE DI MARIA
The
two Paralympic sailors from Milan, Fabrizio Olmi and Davide Di Maria, won gold medals aboard the RS Venture class at the 2019 Para World Sailing Championships in Spain. The boat on which they won the World Championship is the RS Venture, a technical and challenging boat that makes ours’ victory even more important. They will tell us about the fabulous world of Paralympic sailing. The video interview will be aired on all our channels (website, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram).

JUNE 01, 5 P.M. – INTERVIEW WITH SERGIO CARAMEL
Born in 1995, from Padua, and awarded by the UVAI as Owner of the Year in the Minialtura category, the young sailor from Padua in 2019 at the helm of the Melges 24 Arkanoè by Montura won the title of European ORC Sportboat Champion. A specialist in minialturas and monotypes, since with the same Melges with which he and his crew won the European, he also races with good results in One Design. And in monotypes, it is known, only and only the best sailors emerge. The video interview will be aired on all our channels (website, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram).

JUNE 02, 5 P.M. – INTERVIEW WITH GIULIA GRILLI AND PIETRO JAN BELLOT
By now they call them the “dragons of the sea” Giulia Grilli and Pietro Jan Bellot (ASD Svagamente) who took first place in Bari at the Under 16 Italian Youth Championship of the Hobie cat Dragoon class of multihulls. Young and with a boat “out of the chorus.” They took 7285 votes only in the second round of voting… The video interview will be aired on all our channels (website, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram).

JUNE 03, 5 P.M. – INTERVIEW WITH ANDREA BARBERA
The 40-year-old Agrigento man completed the circumnavigation of Sicily aboard an uninhabitable 5-meter catamaran. He grinded out the 500-mile route (clockwise from the port of San Leone, Agrigento) in 18 days and 12 stages. A huge human adventure and a technical and sporting challenge with a high coefficient of difficulty: with 11,054 total votes, it won the TAG Heuer Most Voted Audience Award. The video interview will be aired on all our channels (website, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram).

JUNE 04, 5 P.M. – INTERVIEW WITH AMBROSE BECCARIA
Reigning Sailor of the Year Ambrogio Beccaria needs no introduction! Milanese born in 1991, he is the first Italian sailor in history to win the solo Mini Transat (in 6.50 m boats from France to the Caribbean). What was surprising was the clear and unequivocal superiority of “bogi” over the great French specialists in the class. In fact, Beccaria won, narrowly, the first stage finishing in Gran Canaria. But he then dominated the second one, imposing abysmal gaps. There could be no shortage of votes from the public “by and by.” Chapeau. The video interview will be aired on all our channels (website, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram).

JUNE 05, 5 p.m. – INTERVIEW WITH… POLITO SAILING TEAM
The Polito Sailing Team is a student group at the Polytechnic University of Turin that engages in the design, construction and operation of prototype skiffs that are ultra-fast, ultralight (the photo shows this) and environmentally sustainable. In 2019, the feat came with winning the 1001 VELA Cup with the prototype skiff Fenix, which the team built using 75 percent of its weight in recyclable materials. Designers, sailors, and boats of the future are born at PoliTo; research is combined with technology and mixed with the passion of young people. The video interview will be aired on all our channels (website, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram).

JUNE 06, 9 P.M. – THE EVENING OF CHAMPIONS
On Saturday, June 6, at 9 p.m., the Evening of Champions will be staged, hosted by Mino Taveri and Bacci Del Buono. Only then will you find out who will be the TAG Heuer 2020 Sailor of the Year and the winners of all the other awards (TAG Heuer Young, Innovation, Performance, #don’tcrackunderpressure, and the special Tribute and TAG Heuer Passion awards: the Most Voted nominee, i.e., the most voted by the public, is already known. It is Andrea Barbera). They will all be connected, and all we will be doing is replicating, online, what we have been doing physically for years. It will be an unforgettable Evening of Champions. The broadcast will be aired on all our channels (website, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram).

JUNE 07, 5 P.M. – THE “AFTERVELIST” LIVE
On Sunday, June 7, in the afternoon, just as happens in all the best awards, we have planned an “after-festival” space where, live on our social platforms, we will connect with all the winners of the Sailor of the Year. Winners with whom you can interact live and ask questions without qualms. The atmosphere will be relaxed and trust us, you will not fail to have a laugh together with the great protagonists of Italian sailing. The live broadcast will be visible on our Facebook page and Youtube channel.
