The jury has spoken. After selecting 51 “nominated” products from 108 accessories that were nominated (24 nations represented) for the DAME (Design Award Mets, the prestigious award for the most innovative products among those presented at the Amsterdam show), the names of the winners have arrived, category by category. For the first time in 25 years of DAME, overall there was a tie victory. In fact, Spinlock’s Lume-On and the 24V-powered Humphree Electric Stabilizing Fin & Interceptor System were honored with the award.
SIMPLE AND INGENIOUS
The first, of particular interest to sailors, is an ultra-cheap device, a small LED light that installs inside the inner tube of any self-inflating jacket. Taking advantage of the very opacity of the inner tube as a diffusing tool, activating Lume-On will illuminate the vest in such a way as to make the man overboard more than visible, especially at night. A simple and ingenious idea that further advances onboard safety.
TO BE SAFE IN THE ROADSTEAD
The second represents another step forward in the growing market for stabilizers to be used once at anchor in the roadstead. A 360-degree rotating fin (to combat any unintended shipping and dragging once at anchor) that attaches to the hull easily and is 24 V powered.
Next, let’s look at the category winners
CATEGORY 1 – MARINE ELECTRONICS AND MARINE RELATED SOFTWARE
Here the Simrad Halo Pulse Compression Radar Scan triumphed: you will understand what the weather is like and the shape of the coast within 72 miles, and obstacles up to 100 meters ahead. So many functions in one tool.
CATEGORY 2 – INTERIOR EQUIPMENT, FURNISHINGS, MATERIALS AND ELECTRICAL FITTINGS USED IN CABINS
The jury awarded the Waeco CRX-80S. This is a refrigerator/freezer that can transform entirely into a freezer and vice versa. Really very useful on a cruise, where at first with fresh food you need the refrigerator, but then the freezer becomes more important. In this case, all you have to do is move panels around and you’re done.
CATEGORY 3 – MARINE EQUIPMENT, BOATYARD EQUIPMENT AND BOAT CONSTRUCTION TOOLS AND MATERIALS
Do your composite sea intakes need to be upgraded and comply with the ABYC H-27 standard? Why replace them, let’s reinforce them with Tru-Design collar, without new holes, gluing and so on. A quick and inexpensive solution!
CATEGORY 4 – DECK EQUIPMENT, SAILS AND RIGGING
Nautibuoy Marine’s inflatable platforms have multiple functions, but above all, they have the great virtue of transforming the boat in the roadstead into a real “resort” at anchor.
CATEGORY 5 – CLOTHING AND CREW ACCESSORIES
Here the victory went to the Henri Lloyd Flex 3D sailing jacket. Very light, warm, breathable. Apparently, it is 33% more effective than previous models, a real revolution.
The “Lifesaving and Safety Equipment” and “Machinery, Propulsion, Mechanical and Electrical Systems and Fitting” categories were obviously the preserve of the two overall winning products, the Lume-On and the Humphree stabilizer. But it didn’t end there: in fact, a product we know very well was included among the special mentions.
SPECIAL MENTION – TACKING MASTER
Tacking Master is completely analog (it is a kind of “clock” with two bezels to be rotated according to changes in the wind): it only needs a compass on board. You will need this to take wind and buoy grades so that you can set the device. The overview on the dial will help the tactician or helmsman visualize all the most important directional data in order to be better prepared for any change in wind direction and to assess the “good” and “poor” in real time. www.nauticplace.com
