Are you on a sailing vacation? Are you trying trolling but are limited to “slicing water” without getting any results? If you find yourself in this situation, we give you a super tip to change direction and bring some fish to the table.
The best bait for summer hunters (e.g., skipjack tuna, dolphinfish, mackerel) is right in front of us but we are not aware of it: the shadow of our boat and our sails. It works like this: on very hot days with little wind, when the sea is flat, the fish drastically reduce their activity and go in search of shade. For this reason, the best areas are often near docks or around a ship moored offshore. But if we don’t have anything like that nearby we will take advantage of our boat. We turn off the engine, raise the sails, and even if we sail at 2.5-3 knots at best it is still okay, in fact it is almost better than being faster. At that point we will spin our lines into the water (prepared as we explained HERE) but at a very small distance from our stern, just 8-10 meters, exactly in our wake. The fish, with luck, will be intrigued by the shadow of our boat and the silhouette of our keel and, without the disturbance of the engine, will approach our boat, finding our bait in their path.
Remember: fish responsibly, respect the minimum sizes of each species, and take only the maximum amounts required by law.
