What breaks down most frequently aboard a boat? Coming to our aid is a nice study carried out by the French magazine Voiles et Voiliers, which looks at all 262 boats that took part in the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers), the semi-competitive rally from Gran Canaria to Rodney Bay (Saint Lucia).
SAILS LEAD THE “RANKING”
During the more than 3,000-mile Atlantic crossing, sails broke most frequently (22 percent of the failures), followed by running rigging (lines, halyards and sheets) and damage to the engine and the targone. A worrisome 10% was recorded by fixed rigging (shrouds, forestay), while autopilot, rudders, electrical system and watermaker complete the list, which you will find in detail below.
