From today we begin a journey together. A 15-part, 45-year-long “sailing” through the covers of the Sailing Newspaper, with which we will relive the most significant stages of recent sailing history. Since 1975, when Mario Oriani realized that “sailing was a therapeutic escape without being a way to escape and escape, but to check, to reflect, to decide. To feel like free men” and founded the first magazine devoted exclusively to the world of sailing to this day.
Each week, three covers from our archive. Looking forward to the special issue celebrating the 45th anniversary of the GdV that we are preparing for you, on newsstands and digitally in October. Below we explain all the initiatives we have set up to celebrate our birthday with you. But now it is time to look back. Because as the great Ennio Flaiano said, “Courage, the best is past.”
1975-77. THE GREAT STORIES OF SAILING
1975. Ambrogio Fogar, the first controversy.
The Journal of Sailing has just been born and the first controversy is already erupting: Fogar has finished his solo round-the-world race and is publishing a book chronicling the feat. A storm is described in the words of another great navigator, John Guzzwell. The GdV notices, then in the newsroom we explain. A handshake and the controversy subsides.
Giorgio Falck’s Guia III, the most famous boat of the time, sank in just fifteen minutes during the Atlantic Triangle, struck by a killer whale. The crew is miraculously saved. “Not even God could have saved the boat,” Guia III skipper Jerome Poncet declares to GdV.
1977. Italy enters big sailing
In the queen of offshore races, the Admiral’s Cup, Italy makes its mark, thanks to boats like Moby Dick, Mandrake, Vanina. During the Fastnet race, the first to pass the mythical lighthouse is Raul Gardini’s Moro di Venezia I.
