36th America’s Cup
Spies and the America’s Cup, a 150-year-old story. But this time there is something new, starting with the victim. Rarely in the long Cup saga had the defender been the victim of prying eyes and deep throats. Team New Zealand, through CEO Grant Dalton, reported that it had discovered “infiltrators” on its own team.
The type of information that was stolen has not yet been specified, but it appears that in the first instance it is organizational and economic information about the preparation of the America’s Cup in Auckland. The fear is that additional sensitive information on Kiwis’ Boat 1 and 2 projects is also in the spies’ possession. These appear to be two individuals, who were promptly fired and sued, and toward whom Team New Zealand has taken action to recover all sensitive information.
Nothing, however, that jeopardizes the organization of the Cup and the solidity of Team New Zealand, which remains at least in the predictions one step ahead of the challengers.
