The show must go on. The America’s Cup doesn’t stop, and now rumors of a possible postponement of the ACWS in Auckland, scheduled for December, resulting in the postponement of the Prada Cup and the America’s Cup, scheduled from January to March 2021, are becoming much fainter. Also because in fact a one-month postponement would not bring any public benefit since the conditions for entry into New Zealand, mandatory two-week quarantine and specific permits for entry into the country, are unlikely to change any time soon. Is it therefore moving toward a “closed-door” America’s Cup? More or less it will be something like this, or at any rate with a smaller audience than in the historic Auckland editions, as indeed is happening with any sporting event in the world. Little bad for Cup lovers who, especially in Italy but also in the rest of the world, will have the opportunity to watch the races on TV, free and free-to-air .
What happens in the meantime in Auckland. The first news coming out of the southern hemisphere is that Luna Rossa’s staggered crew is now on New Zealand soil is facing the mandatory two-week quarantine for entry into New Zealand. Also coming up are the Brits from Ineos Team UK.

The two teams that are working hard on the water instead are Emirates Team New Zealand, the defender, and American Magic. Photographed several times in very close intersections (how was the story about non-agreed practice between two opposing teams?!). Not-so-hidden rumors coming out of Auckland tell of an American boat that is less slow than expected and indeed quite high performing compared to the Kiwis’ AC 75.

This is good news for the regatta, because boats with similar performance are a guarantee of spectacle for the America’s Cup. Also very similar in-flight trim, now American Magic also has a fairly apprued trim as both Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa have shown from the beginning. Different, however, seemed to be the appendages, slightly slanted and with a flap at the ends the foils of the Americans, straight those of the Kiwis. But on these elements we need to assess how much the teams are actually hiding in order not to show the opponent, and so closely, their best cards.
Mauro Giuffrè
There will, of course, be no shortage of Cup-themed updates in the coming weeks and months in the Sailing Newspaper and in the dedicated Luna Rossa pavilion at Milano Yachting week.
