Spaceship? Space missile? No, it is a sailboat and it will sail around the world, solo, nonstop and unassisted. We are talking about the new Imoca 60, built by Italian Persico Marine for French skipper Thomas Ruyant.

A state-of-the-art Imoca foiler designed by magician Giullarme Verdier, who studied increasingly extreme and unconventional shapes for the young transalpine. Ruyant is preparing for his second Vendée Globe and will debut his new boat at the Transat Jacques Vabre 2019, in which our own Giancarlo Pedote will also participate.

Of the boat up to it little has been seen, but from what little has been seen it seems that the search for increasingly aerodynamic shapes is one of the goals of Imoca’s new designs, which by some estimates could seriously approach the 40-knot wall. Particularly noticeable is how the bow volumes at the top are increasingly flared, while at the stern the typical width and edges of oceanic opens remain.
