sailing cup
Who knows why in the Mediterranean, Italy, until now had not yet succeeded in organizing a regatta/sailing festival for all, as they have been doing in the Caribbean for decades
. I had breathed in that magical atmosphere many years ago at Antigua Week. Hundreds of seafaring enthusiasts with boats of all kinds gather in a bay, drop anchor and participate in a friendly regatta, and then celebrate together with music, food and drinks on the beach. An unforgettable experience, the essence of the sailing world.

So one morning I picked up the phone and called Enrico Bertacchi, secretary general of the most important sailing school in the Mediterranean, Centro Velico Caprera. He certainly could understand on the fly what I was proposing, which was to have a sailing party at his base as well, like in the Caribbean. There was good reason, the CVC in northeastern Sardinia is the ideal place as the venue for the “myth” leg of the 2019 TAG Heuer Vela Cup season. A fairy-tale bay, Porto Palma, perfectly sheltered and equipped with beach, shore facilities and an atmosphere that, I will apologize to Caribbean lovers, is unparalleled in the world. A mythical, unique, unrepeatable location.

We went to lunch and after an hour the thing was done. This is how the new 2019 leg of the legendary TAG Heuer Vela Cup was born, which will take place on Monday, Aug. 26, at Porto Palma in Caprera, in the Centro Velico’s lair on the Mediterranean’s most fascinating island, within the Maddalena Archipelago, the home of sailors. Why Monday, August 26? Because it is the beginning of what by definition marks the end of the August vacation, when there is already less “mess,” the crosses and delights of cruising have been unleashed, and we have settled in with the crew. One is more relaxed, in short, and looks forward with “saudade” to the nearby return home, to normalcy.

It therefore takes a good vacation closure, the Caprera Sailing Cup precisely. For those who then chartered a boat in northern Sardinia-and there are many-it is a great opportunity (as they do in the Caribbean) to spend two days outside the usual bath-dinner routine.

Even for those who do not yet know what to do in the last week of August, this is a good idea to take advantage of. You are in sailing heaven, you can take advantage of it, having finished the “mythical” TAG Heuer Vela Cup experience on Aug. 26, to sail in one of the most coveted places in the world. Some people say “I never go to northern Sardinia because it’s too windy.” It is a sound “hoax.” In August, the average wind intensity in this area is 8 knots. What more do you want? We thought of Porto Palma because, in maximum safety, boats can anchor in the beautiful bay without any problems for the days of the Vela Cup. Porto Palma is perhaps the most sheltered bay in the archipelago and the largest, where more than a hundred boats can stay anchored at once.

Ashore you go down with the tender by leaving it on the beach or tied to the dock. If you give us a whistle, we will pick you up. Also, a trail to feast your eyes on. A triangle coastline where you can enjoy sailing in various gaits with the thrill of sailing past together with dozens of boats along the legendary islands of the Bisce and Monks. I assure you, a memory that remains for life. But that’s not the end of it, towards evening the party with awards ceremony begins on the beach in Porto Palma. We have already optioned prizes for almost everyone, delicious food, satisfying drinks, and the right music for everyone. See you on August 26 in Sardinia.
