There are less than 24 hours to go until voting closes in this first round of the Sailor of the Year, you still have a short time to support your favorite, if you haven’t done so yet! Tomorrow at 12 noon the poll will be closed, and the 50 candidates with the most votes will move on to the next round (which will be staged from March 3 to 15: we will start from scratch as far as votes are concerned; a summary of all stages is at the bottom).

THE TOPTEN IN X-RAY
He seems elusive now, Tony Cili, the Calabrian kiter who has literally monopolized the first phase of the poll, with (at the time of writing) 1,262 preferences out of the more than 11,000 you have expressed so far. Also surprising in some ways was the claque of supporters of Peppe Fornich, Sicilian owner of the Grand Soleil 37 Sagola Biotrading, second with 750 votes. He is followed by the very young Mattia Cesana, winner of the Garda Meeting among Cadets, with 710 votes and the beloved Gaetano Mura, with nearly 700 votes. In fifth place was not a character but a boat: Lisca Bianca, the boat with which Sergio and Licia Albeggiani undertook the round-the-world voyage in the 1980s and which has now resumed sailing.

It continues with another Crotonian like Cili, young optimist Francesco Guglielmo Balzano, ahead of navigators Andrea and Chicca Pestarini. First among the designers is Paolo Bua, the Sardinian who made the French fall in love at the Paris Salon with his small, high-performance boats. Rounding out the top ten are Giuseppe Paolillo, a budding wind surfer, and his “colleague” Matteo Iachino, fresh from winning the PWA Slalom World Championship.
