George Szabo USA - Craig Moss USAHere we go. The time has come again this year to launch the most prestigious award in Italian sailing, given since 1991. The Sailor of the Year is awarded to the one who, based on your preferences (which you can express in the poll on our website, starting January 29), turns out to be the sailor who has most excited you. It will be your votes that will decide who will be part of the shortlist for the final victory (you can also add your favorite to the list, if not found in the “big list”, by sending an email with the cv of who you want to nominate to speciali@panamaeditore.it January 29 to February 4), among which will be unveiled at the 2016 TAG Heuer VELAFestival (May 5 to 8 in Santa Margherita Ligure: info on www.velafestival.com), during the Day of Champions on Friday, May 6, the 2016 TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year.

Rankings and articles in hand, in the editorial office we made a review of the past season by identifying 100 “nominations” among Italian sailors, distinguishing them into athletes (derivists and specialists in the Olympic classes), owners and sailors (i.e., ocean sailors or those who otherwise showed off their skills in “long sailing”) But not only that. Every owner knows that the boat has a soul. We created a unique category for both offshore and classic winning boats. The categories are indicative: the challenge is all against all! We will present to you, ten at a time for ten days all 100 candidates (in strict alphabetical order), whom you will be able to vote for on our website, let us remind you, starting January 29. Let’s find out the seventh 10, at the bottom you will instead find the outline of how the 2016 TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year works.

SEVENTH ROUND – FROM HONORED… A QUERIN

vincenzo onoratoVINCENZO ONORATO (Owner)

Together with the aforementioned Michele Galli, Neapolitan tycoon Vincenzo Onorato was the absolute protagonist of the Rolex Middle Sea Race with his Cookson 50: in IRC Galli won but in ORC overall the Neapolitan managed to come out on top. Result: in 2015 the Middle Sea spoke completely Italian!

jacopo pasiniJACOPO PASINI (Athlete)
Jacopo Pasini won the 2015 Italian match-race title. Does it seem little to you? Absolutely not, when you consider that this is the sixth time the Circolo Velico Ravennate holder has won it, and the fifth consecutive time. In fact, he is undefeated since the 2011 edition. No one beats him.

Giancarlo Pedote / Proto 747

GIANCARLO PEDOTE (Seaman)
Wherever he goes, he wins. Giancarlo Pedote is probably the strongest ocean sailor we have in Italy: in 2015, the FFV (the French sailing federation) awarded him and Erwan Le Roux, his partner on the Multi 50 trimaran FenetrèA-Prysmian, the prestigious 2015 Trophée des Champions following their important achievements during the year: winning the Transat Jacques Vabre, the very tough race from Le Havre (France) to Itajaì (Brazil) and all the other Multi 50 races on the calendar.

Marcello Persico in the Persico Marine Boatyard in Bergamo (Italy)

MARCELLO PERSICO (Designer)
Persico is synonymous with excellence. Internationally recognized, especially after the miraculous repair work on Team Vestas after the Volvo Ocean Race incident. Marcello Persico is head of the Nembro (Bergamo) shipyard, which is currently the most important “hi-tech” entity in Italian sailing. This is where the most cutting-edge boats are churned out, and this is where the new VO65s will be produced ahead of VOR 2018.

Screenshot 2016-01-21 at 2:35:15 p.m.ANDREA PIETROLUCCI (Owner)
Andrea Pietrolucci, owner of the Mylius 14E55 Milu, is one of the most important players of the 2015 season. He graduated, after a close fight with friend/rival Leonardo Servi, Italian Offshore Champion overall and in Class A. He also took away the satisfaction of winning the Owner of the Year award in Class A (fourth overall).

pilates : rubagottiMATTEO PILATI / FRANCESCO RUBAGOTTI (Athletes)
Matteo Pilati and Francesco Rubagotti embody a new generation of sailors: the “flying” ones, thanks to foils: in fact, they triumphed at the 2015 Redbull Foiling Generation Italia in Malcesine (Verona, Italy) race on Flying Phantoms. They thus qualified for the world finals of the event to be held this year.

laser-PLANCHESTAINER GIANMARCO

GIANMARCO PLANCHESTAINER (Athlete)
The athlete in force at Fraglia Vela Malcesine in 2015 “shot” two luxury silver medals at both the European and World Youth Radial (just one point behind the first!) in Portugal and Canada, respectively. He then responded with an additional silver at the EUROSAF U19.

matthew chickensMATTEO POLLI (Designer)
Matteo Polli, Chief Designer of Italia Yachts, is the hottest designer in ORC racer/cruisers. From 2014 are the Italia Yachts 15.98 and the fast cruiser-racer Low Noise 2 commissioned by Giuseppe Giuffré (for whom Polli also optimized the M37 Low Noise), 2015 World Champion. Wherever he gets his hands on, he is likely to have boats he has modified win: his, for example, are the appendages on the First 36.7 BluOne and the optimization of the Mumm 30 Mummy One as well as the J-111 Black Bull. Polli is good at it.

toni punzio : ilenia indacoTONI PUNZIO / ILENIA INDACO (Designers)
Totally made in Italy is the 435 Sail catamaran, the third (after the 625 and the 455) made by the Syracuse-based Set Marine shipyard designed by Toni Punzio and Ilenia Indaco (pictured): underdeck spaces with an original layout and aggressive hulls make it one of the most interesting boats of 2015. Let us not be told that catamarans are just the stuff of the French!

Screenshot 2016-01-21 at 2:34:59 p.m.ALESSIO QUERIN (Owner)
Minialtura in Italy is making a comeback after a period of substantial darkness. Minialtura’s Owner of the Year is Alessio Querin, in command of Mummy One. The verdict could not have been different, as Querin’s boat (with Trieste’s Jacopo Cunial at the helm and Monfalcone’s Loris Plet at the mainsail) had won the Minialtura tricolor in Chioggia in May.

HOW THE 2016 SAILOR OF THE YEAR VOTING WORKS

On Friday, May 6, at 7 p.m., the Sailor of the Year award ceremony will take place at the VELAFestival in Santa Margherita Ligure (Genoa) during the Evening of Champions. But how does one come to award the most prestigious prize in Italian sailing? With a long and “hard” online selection process where your input is crucial. We explain it in detail, step by step.

– FIRST STAGE (WINNING VOTE) – FROM 100 to 52 CANDIDATES.
– 100 CANDIDATES to vote online on our website from Jan. 29 to Feb. 16
– 20 CANDIDATES INDICATED BY YOU (you can send us names and motivation from Jan. 29 to Feb. 4) voted online from Feb. 5 to Feb. 16
– The 50 most voted and the 2 most voted among those indicated by you pass the round
– SECOND STAGE (WINNING VOTE) – 52 to 25 CANDIDATES.
– 52 CANDIDATES to vote online from March 4 to 15
– The 25 highest vote-getters pass the round
– THIRD STAGE (CONSULTATIVE VOTE) – 25 to 5 CANDIDATES.
– 25 CANDIDATES to vote online from March 31 to April 15. The online public vote has advisory value: taking into account your preferences, a jury selects the 5 who pass the round
– FOURTH PHASE – CHOOSING THE SAILOR OF THE YEAR (AND OTHER AWARDS)
-THE 5 CANDIDATES make up the shortlist of “papabili” for Sailor of the Year. These will compete, based on the jury’s decisions, for the Sailor of the Year award and the others: TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year “Passion,” TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year “Innovation,” and TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year “Performance.”
