Here we go. The time has come again this year to launch the most prestigious award in Italian sailing, given since 1991. The Sailor of the Year is awarded to the one who, based on your preferences (which you can express in the poll on our website, starting January 29), turns out to be the sailor who has most excited you. It will be your votes that will decide who will be part of the shortlist for the final victory (you can also add your favorite to the list, if not found in the “big list”, by sending an email with the cv of who you want to nominate to speciali@panamaeditore.it January 29 to February 4), among which will be unveiled at the 2016 TAG Heuer VELAFestival (May 5 to 8 in Santa Margherita Ligure: info on www.velafestival.com), during the Day of Champions on Friday, May 6, the 2016 TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year.
THE “MAGNIFICENT 100” LIST
Rankings and articles in hand, in the editorial office we made a review of the past season by identifying 100 “nominations” among Italian sailors, distinguishing them into athletes (derivists and specialists in the Olympic classes), owners and sailors (i.e., ocean sailors or those who otherwise showed off their skills in “long sailing”) But not only that. Every owner knows that the boat has a soul. We created a unique category for both offshore and classic winning boats. The categories are indicative: the challenge is all against all! We will present to you, ten at a time for ten days all 100 candidates (in strict alphabetical order), whom you will be able to vote for on our website, let us remind you, starting January 29. Let’s find out the quarter 10, at the bottom you will instead find the outline of how the 2016 TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year works.
FOURTH ROUND – BY DIETHELM… TO FERRARO/IERALDI
PATRIK DIETHELM (Athlete)
Patrik Diethelm is Italy’s … fastest athlete on the water. In Luderitz, Namibia, where the Chris Benz Speed Challenge is held every year, Diethelm reached the incredible speed of 52.33 knots. Imagine what it is like on a sailboard to reach 100 kilometers per hour!
LUCA DOMENICI (Owner)
In 2015, the Italian J70 saw the exponential growth of the Notaro Team captained by Notaro’s Luca Domenici: a crowning season culminating with the European class title win in Monte Carlo, achieved ahead of another Italian crew: Franco Solerio’s L’elagain.
DUVETICA GREY GOOSE (Boat)
Sergio Quirino Valente’s Arya 415 Duvetica Grey Goose has been at the center of controversy after a “wrong” rating favored it too much at the Italian Championships: the fact remains that the crew won the national title, and the results obtained during 2015 confirm all the goodness of the crew.
ENFANT TERRIBLE (TP52 – Boat)
The TP52 is a boat that, if you know how to carry it well, guarantees you excellent results not only in real but also in corrected time. And he proved that he knows how to do it in a big way Alberto Rossi: the Marche native won the ORC (class A) rainbow title as part of the 2015 World Offshore Championships in Barcelona.
MATTEO EVANGELISTI (Athlete)
It is a silver with a bitter taste that won by Matteo Evangelisti in the RS:X class of the Eurosaf in Brest. In fact, the Civitavecchia windsurfer arrived at Sunday’s Medal Race with several points ahead of host Le Bosq, but in the Medal he ran into a seventh-place finish that relegated him to second place. Still, Evangelisti is on the roof of Europe and we will hear more about him.
EXTREMA (X35 – BOAT)
The X35, if well led, can always provide satisfaction, even in compensated time. Ravenna’s Fabio Emiliani, aboard Extrema, was crowned Italian Champion in Class 3 Cruise/Regatta at the 2015 Offshore Nationals in Civitanova Marche.
UMBERTO FELCI (Designer)
Umberto Felci confirms himself as one of Italy’s most prolific, eclectic, and esteemed designers: in 2015 he signed series boats such as the Dufour 460 GL and 310 GL, high-performance cruiser racers such as the Ice 52, and a blue water (but still high-performance) such as the Grand Soleil 58. At 51, he is certainly one of the most influential designers on the international scene.
GIACOMO FERRARI / GIULIO CALABRO’ (Athletes)
Rome’s Giacomo Ferrari and Giulio Calabrò, both class of 1996, managed to finish third in the 470 Youth World Championship in Thessaloniki. The result, which passed slightly under the radar by virtue of the victory, among the females, of the aforementioned Di Salle-Dubbini, is actually worth a great deal, considering the technical level of the Olympic doubles. We will hear more about them.
EDOARDO FERRARO / FRANCESCO ORLANDO (Athletes)
At the 420 Under-17 World Championship in Castle Bay Karatsu, Japan, Edoardo Ferraro and Francesco Orlando took victory. A great result for the young San Remo couple (regulars in the upper reaches of the rankings), achieved with an impressive 21 points ahead of the seconds. Looking forward, they can really be a bet for a possible Olympic double. About Edward’s sister, we tell you-about her below!
VERONICA FERRARO / GIULIA IERARDI (Athletes)
Veronica Ferraro (sister of the aforementioned Edward), along with Giulia Ierardi, won the women’s ranking at the 420 Under-17 World Championship in Castle Bay Karatsu and gold at the Women’s European Championship in Bourgas, Bulgaria. It really must be said: there is no shortage of “meat in the fire” in the Ferraro family, the future for these brothers looks more than rosy.

HOW THE 2016 SAILOR OF THE YEAR VOTING WORKS
On Friday, May 6, at 7 p.m., the Sailor of the Year award ceremony will take place at the VELAFestival in Santa Margherita Ligure (Genoa) during the Evening of Champions. But how does one come to award the most prestigious prize in Italian sailing? With a long and “hard” online selection process where your input is crucial. We explain it in detail, step by step.
– FIRST STAGE (WINNING VOTE) – FROM 100 to 52 CANDIDATES.
– 100 CANDIDATES to vote online on our website from Jan. 29 to Feb. 16
– 20 CANDIDATES INDICATED BY YOU (you can send us names and motivation from Jan. 29 to Feb. 4) voted online from Feb. 5 to Feb. 16
– The 50 most voted and the 2 most voted among those indicated by you pass the round
– SECOND STAGE (WINNING VOTE) – 52 to 25 CANDIDATES.

– The 25 highest vote-getters pass the round
– THIRD STAGE (CONSULTATIVE VOTE) – 25 to 5 CANDIDATES.
– 25 CANDIDATES to vote online from March 31 to April 15. The online public vote has advisory value: taking into account your preferences, a jury selects the 5 who pass the round
– FOURTH PHASE – CHOOSING THE SAILOR OF THE YEAR (AND OTHER AWARDS)
-THE 5 CANDIDATES make up the shortlist of “papabili” for Sailor of the Year. These will compete, based on the jury’s decisions, for the Sailor of the Year award and the others: TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year “Passion,” TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year “Innovation,” and TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year “Performance.”
