We are at the crucial junction of the Rome for All Rome for Two, the 530-mile offshore regatta that runs from Riva di Traiano, via Ventotene, to Lipari and then back to Riva for the finish line. After the Sirocco up to 25 knots in the first phase of the race, on the approach to the Aeolian Islands it is the becalmed weather that takes over. Still leading the race is Franco Nieggeler’s Cookson 50 Kuka 3, also aboard Mitch Booth and Pietro D’Alì, now almost at the Lipari gate, which he should round, wind permitting, shortly. A little further back, detached by about 20 miles, Nino Merola’s Swan 42 Scheggia.

This was the message sent to us by Lamberto Cesari from aboard Kuka 3 in the night:

“Sunday 6 p.m. update: We may be on the last side of this long windward leg, approaching the Aeolian Islands from the left lay looking for the last puffs of this sirocco coming down from the Straits. Kuka3 and his crew are showing their skills, running the boat in a wind that has dropped to 5 knots with wave against. Weight forward mode and eyes on the fillets: on. 2am update on Monday, April 12: The sirocco breeze that had pushed us this far gave up on us 40 miles off Lipari, since then countless sail changes in the night to keep the boat at speed. Slowly we get there, under a beautiful starry sky even dolphins have come to welcome us to Sicily.”

The ascent to Riva di Traiano promises to be a “tremendous” one; after the lull has passed, the Mistral is expected to arrive in a few hours, up to 30-35 knots, with waves over 2 meters.

In the Per Due real-time ranking, the Comet 45 Libertine leads, still about 50 miles from Lipari. Meanwhile, the first boat of the Riva per Tutti, the short course race to Ventotene and back, arrived, Gianluca Lamaro’s J99 Palinuro strongly credited for the handicap victory.
