After 313 days of sailing, in 1968, Robin Knox-Johnston won the insane race, the Golden Globe Trophy, and at only 28 years old, he made history: he was the first man to circumnavigate the globe solo and nonstop. The boat that led him to success, Suhaili, he had built himself completely out of wood. To orient himself at sea he used only the sextant.
Among Sir Knox-Johnston’s accomplishments is the record, set in 1994, for circumnavigating the globe aboard the catamaran Enza (74-day crossing) paired with Peter Blake at the Jules Verne Trophy. With Suahili he participated in the ’88 Ostar and in ’90 he reached the North Pole. In 2007 he set his latest record: at 68, he was the oldest man to circle the planet solo. In 2014, at age 75, he finished third in the Route du Rhum!
