It is no longer a trend, it is now the reality for a certain segment of sport cruising boats: taking some of the successful elements of ocean openers and declining them with their own lexicon. Just what Marc Lombard, one of the open racing geniuses of the 1990s and beyond, has done with Fora Marine’s new RM 1180. A “futuristic” sport cruiser in some respects, but in reality it simply applied to its segment what is seen in the Ocean on boats such as the Imoca 60 and Class 40.
Deck flares at the bow, to decrease the weight of the boat, keep the center of gravity low, promote the descent of water rising to the deck, and decrease turbulence on the front sails. A detail0 this that makes the construction of the new RM 11.80 very articulate, since Marc Lombard’s choice to have the deck recessed obliges having the first redans in marine plywood and the last one in vtr that mates with the sandwich deck to achieve the rounded shape. The bow is inverted, a choice that marries both aerodynamic and aesthetic reasons and fits into an overall look that is clearly sporty.
The hull is the typical angular one seen on boats geared to important performance at carrying gaits, the RM 1180 yes from the first tests, as the photos also show, has shown an aptitude for gliding and surfing with ease under gennaker.
The interiors are bright, in the spirit of modern design and with moderate use of wood both for aesthetic choice and weight saving.
