It was a busy weekend of racing that just passed, with several events up and down the boot that gathered thousands of enthusiasts. Boats of all kinds, from small 2.4s to Maxis, let’s go and see how it went.
VELEZIANA
It was a breathtaking spectacle with sails of all sizes and colors that crowded St. Mark’s Basin in Venice for the 12th edition of the Veleziana, organized by theSailing Company under the auspices of the Navy e Of the City of Venice. From supermaxi to Dinghy 12′ to Stars and Sails to the Third. Coastal course for the 200 boats from 8 to 30 meters, from 10 nations, with departure from the Bocca di Porto of Venice Lido, entry into the lagoon espectacular arrival in San Marco basin in front of San Giorgio Island, headquarters of the Compagnia della Vela. The battle on the water begins punctually at 1 p.m. with a smooth start and with the supermaxi immediately in the lead:
Gulf of Trieste
(skipper Francesca Clapcich, tactician Giulia Conti, coxswain the American Sally Barkow) is immediately first at the disengagement mark followed by Portopiccolo Tempus Fugit (skipper Enrico Zennaro e Ludde Ingvall) with the whole large fleet of competitors following at a distance. The two supermaxis literally make a vacuum behind them and engage in close head-to-head battles that continue almost to the finish line with the women’s crew of Golfo di Trieste, consisting of 15 female sailors from 6 nations, crossing the finish line in first place, taking the ‘line honors’ and the overall victory. In third place was Idrusa by Paolo Montefusco. www.compagniadellavela.org
VENICE OSPITALITY CHALLENGE
Compared to the Barcolana, the 5 knots the maxis found in Venice seemed almost like a “storm.” The result, however, did not change and the victory went again to the Slovenians of Way of Life – The Gritti Palace of skipper Gaspar Vincec. Second place for the girls of Golfo di Trieste – Hilton Molino Stucky with the women’s crew captained by Francesca Clapcich. In third place was Idrusa – Palazzina Grassi, with Olympian Paolo Montefusco at the helm. As is customary, the formula for this regatta saw fourteen Maxi Yachts competing matched with the Venetian haute hôtellerie. www.veniceospitalitychallenge.it
WORLD 2.4
The 2.4 mR World Championships came to a close after a windy week with 7 races brought home by the Race Committee in often difficult conditions, mainly due to the formed sea and strong winds that forced several competitors to retire early. World Championship however, very well attended-91 athletes from 15 nations. At ease in these conditions were the Northern European athletes who manned the upper reaches of the rankings from the first race, among them, consistent performance by British sailor and Paralympic sailing super star Megan Pascoe, author of an impeccable series of races (1.1,2,3,2,1) and becoming world champion. Silver medal for Finnish sailor Marko Dahlberg, who also had a very good championship(2,2,1,1,7,4,5) and bronze for Fia Fjelddahl (9,5,9,5,3,10,4) athlete under the Swedish team. First Italian in the standings is Antonio Squizzato, who discounts a difficult start but redeems himself with a growing championship culminating with a first place in the last regatta. www.yachtclubitaliano.it
Match Race European Championship
The European Match Race Championship was held in Sibenik, Croatia., an event organized by D Marin Mandalina, already host of the ORC World Championship and other events of international stature. At the start were the twelve best one-on-one specialists from the Old Continent, and among them was Ettore Botticini, who finished in second place. For the young Tuscan helmsman, recently released from the Under ranks, it was one of the first opportunities to confront the overall elite of match racing. “It has been four days of very light wind and the regattas were held using Platu 25s and J/70s: it was therefore of paramount importance to be quick in changing ‘mode’ of conduct, given the great difference between the two boats, one equipped with gennaker and the other with spinnaker. The binges were completely different, and from one match to the next one had to pay close attention to how to interpret the dial-up phases – Ettore Botticini explains – We started off well, with a three-to-one partial, then on the second day the performance declined due in part to the schedule unfavorable to us from the standpoint of long waits. From the third something clicked and we changed our pace, winning all the round robin duels we had left, against strong sailors like Presen and Zbroja“.
