Good news for Made in Italy: Ubi Maior Italia has become the official supplier of Emirates Team New Zealand for the 2017 America’s Cup campaign. The New Zealand team headed by Grant Dalton (in which Italian Max Sirena also plays) will use deck equipment from the Tuscan company and develop custom products with the collaboration of Ubi Maior. A challenge at the pinnacle of sailing that will enable the company, already an established excellence, to take a further step forward in design and then transfer the accumulated experience to the production of series products.
BECAUSE UBI MAIOR
If you want to lighten your boat and make it more competitive but at the same time simplify maneuvering, you will need to be careful when choosing deck equipment. Ubi Maior comes up with a series of cutting-edge “deck hardware” products. Ultralight and strong blocks made of thick anodized aluminum alloy with Torlon or Delrin rollers, loops, hi-tech furlers (such as the Re-Wind), deck accessories. The latest endeavor of the Molino del Piano (Florence) company is called Jiber and is a structural furling roller that uses a rod cable instead of the classic aluminum extrusion: this being integral to the drum rotates the moment the sail is opened or closed. At the head, the cable is connected to a “lance” that drives a shuttle to which the sail’s feathering point is attached and the halyard, which is obviously released from rotation by a bearing system. By means of two snap-on guides the shuttle, once hoisted, becomes integral with the lance, which rotates together with the forestay allowing the sail to close properly: thus less weight and much less catenary. www.ubimaioritalia.com
