T he lines of the new Mylius 65 FD (Flush Deck) stand out from afar. As soon as I arrived at the port of Santa Margherita, my gaze was caught by the dark gray hull and short, streamlined deckhouse of the boat waiting for me, still far out on the dock, it has a “certain something” already at first sight. Accompanying me on board for the test were Mario Sassi of the Mylius shipyard and the boat’s owner, architect Aldo Parisotto, who, drawing on his experience as an interior designer, including for the boating industry, collaborated on the project, coming up with an experimental interior layout, both in terms of details and furnishing materials. All this while two more Mylius 65′ (one in Flush Deck version and one in Raised Saloon version) and three Mylius 76′ (two Flush Deck and one Deck Saloon) are currently under construction in the shipyard.
“LIGHTWEIGHT” CONSTRUCTION AND CLEANLINESS ON DECK WITHOUT COMPROMISE
The design, once again, is by Alberto Simeone and represents an evolution of the hulls of the shipyard’s previous 60′- 65′: on this new hull, in fact, work has been done to improve the ratio of sail area to displacement. The new hull is also significantly “fuller” than its predecessors, especially in the aft sections, which feature a set-back maximum beam, promising better shape stability, performance in carrying gaits, and course stability at high speeds. 20.20 meters long, 5.25 meters wide, with a sail area (upwind) of 258 square meters, Oscar 3 is constructed entirely of carbon fiber sandwich, unidirectional and multiaxial, with PVC foam core with differentiated density, except for some areas with “solid” lamination, in epoxy matrix with vacuum-bag technique and “post cure.” A choice that allowed the displacement to be kept around 20 tons, following a golden rule of the shipyard in weight distribution: one-third for equipment, one-third for furnishings, and one-third for the structure. A feature, this one, that falls squarely within the parameters of Mylius-branded fast cruisers. Cleanliness on deck is accentuated by the presence of the mainsail sheet winch positioned on a small column amidships, while the primaries and maneuvering ones (all electric from Harken) are located on the aft ends of the benches, where we also find all mast maneuvering deferred to a series of Spinlock stoppers “hidden” under the aft end of the deckhouse. The mainsail track is recessed forward of the column that houses the sheet winch and is adjustable by a hydraulic cylinder from the wheelhouse area. Further enhancing the feeling of cleanliness is the elimination of cross rails, replaced by a flying barber system for racing jibs, thus clearing the fairways: the only rail present is the classic self-tacking jib rail for cruising. The now indispensable delphiniera is perfect for luffing the asymmetric sails (a 240 sq. m. Code 0 and a 451 sq. m. gennaker) and also serves as an anchor nose. As for mast and rigging, the former (like the boom) is High Modulus carbon from Hall Spars, the latter is PBO from Future’s Fibre.
INTERIOR WITH AUTHOR SIGNATURE
As we have already seen, it was the owner himself, Aldo Parisotto, who collaborated four-handedly with Alberto Simeone to give a strong imprint to the interiors where they chose to use smoked eucalyptus and open-pore oak as woods. The dinette is a large open space characterized by the presence of opposing sofas. The design of the area dedicated to the owner is particular: after passing through a carbon sliding door, one enters an “extra-large” suite where the choice of fittings is reminiscent of those of travel suitcases, made of the finest beige leather. The double bed has been placed on the forward bulkhead, while the bathroom area is divided into two, with a separate shower. The interior layout includes, in addition to the owner’s cabin, two other double cabins plus a crew cabin. The electrical system is based on Mastervolt’s “Masterviews system,” which allows control and management of all on-board utilities, either from the “touch screen” panel or via remote connection; electronic instrumentation and autopilot are from B&G, with innovative integrated wireless diagnostic functions.
BOW OUT OF THE HARBOR
As soon as we become aware of a slight breeze marking the waters of the Gulf, we decide not to waste a single second and drop our moorings. Turning on the engine I notice as first thing the extreme quietness of the Yanmar 160 hp equipped with Gori-3 Pale “Overdrive” propeller. As soon as we leave the harbor, we take the opportunity to test its performance: in terms of ideal cruising speed, at 2,000 rpm with the overdrive at full throttle, the boat sails at 10.5 knots, consuming 18 l/h. We decided to hoist the mainsail and unfurl the jib (3Di by North Sails and cared for by Andrea Casale) to test the sailing speeds: with an apparent angle of 28° and a true wind of 4.7 knots the boat’s SOG was always above 6 knots, which shows a marked ability to create the apparent. The wind shows no signs of strengthening, so we decide to give the boat the right power Unrolling the Code 0 from the whip: acceleration is immediate and the SOG splashes up to 9.5 knots with a real wind never exceeding 5.5 knots and an apparent angle between 100 and 110 degrees. Is immediately a whole different story.
