Triton2_FF_SailI was at the Marina di Varazze (Savona) to preview test the new B&G Triton2, the navigation instrument built on the footsteps of the Triton, one of the most successful navigation powerhouses in the sailing world. Before boarding the IMX 40 Energy, on which two prototypes of Triton 2 have been mounted (which will go on sale to the public next September: the price will be around 450 euros), Anthony Chmarny, PR Manager at Navico (the company that brings together the B&G, Simrad and Lowrance brands), is keen to point out that “this is precisely a prototype: the software works perfectly but we still need to evaluate some changes on how it can be installed on board.”

EASE OF INSTALLATION
Let’s hope they don’t change too much since the mounting system is really simple and is the first major innovation of the Triton2: there is no need for any bracket to be installed on the inside of the hull (usually behind the deckhouse). Simply screw in the instrument with four screws, which will then be protected by a frame that can be applied (and removed) by hand.

KEYWORD: READABILITY
As we leave the harbor, the 3 p.m. sun shines brightly-a situation that allows me to assess the readability of the new Triton’s 4.1-inch glassbond LCD display. I wouldn’t go out of my way to call it great: the brightness allows for a perfect view, even against the sun, and the numbers are big and clear, even against the sun. “We tested it last night in the regatta,” Alfonso and Giò, Energy’s two skippers, tell me, “and the backlighting meant that we could see the data perfectly.”

Being totally independent, and equipped with NMEA 0183 and 2000 interfaces, in theory the Triton 2 is a small standalone chartplotter on which you can display the boat’s navigation data (wind, speed, depth etc., in the configuration you want), AIS (new) and even Navico’s exclusive Forwardscan function: by installing a sonar on the bow of the boat (with a sealed steel grommet: the sonar (700 euros) fishes 3 cm and when not in use can be pulled aboard), you will see on the Triton what is happening in front of you: both on the bottom and on the surface of the water (the proportion is 1:8: if the bottom is 10 meters you will be able to see the surface up to 80 meters ahead).

Triton2_Pilot_Controller_FFYou will also be able to view the autopilot data and steer it with the B&G remote control, manage the “jumbo” instruments at the mast, and so on. Finally, you will have all the dedicated sailing features we have already seen on the Zeus multifunctionals: Sailtime and Sailsteer, for starting and tacking in regattas, Smart Manoeuvre, which will allow you to tack at the push of a button. www.bandg.com
