PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
We are not off the coast of Somalia, but in the area of the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, in the heart of the Caribbean, along the routes most frequented by boaters. In late December, a 25-meter boat, White Dumbo, with an Italian skipper and a 10-meter boat, Maritima, were attacked in broad daylight while sailing.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The Ocean Cruising Club has issued a set of recommendations in order to limit the risk of assaults. He recommends sailing in the southernmost Grenadines area at night with no navigation lights on and under sail. So as not to be intercepted by pirates who are not equipped with radar. Speaking of piracy, the warning to limit navigation also comes from maritime authorities in the Philippines who advise avoiding transiting the Palawan area where numerous cases of piracy have occurred.
