THE CHRONICLE OF THE LAST DAYThe BPER Optimist European Championship in Crotone ended in an emotionally charged finale, with lots of racing and a 10-12 knot wind, with the women’s title going to Italy and the men’s to Germany. Italian Gaia Bergonzini, 15, of Fraglia Vela Malcesine on Lake Garda, won the 2016 Optimist European title in Crotone. Completed in the last two races held today in lighter winds of 10 knots, after the strong Tramontana of the past few days, the comeback over the Greek Pappa Melina, who was also overtaken on the podium by Maltese Antonia Schultheis. In the last two runs Gaia took a 14th and a 7th place, while the Greek collapsed with two runs over 20th and the Maltese put in a double first-place finish that earned her silver. The big day for Italian youth sailing was rounded out by the third-place finish for men by Paolo Peracca, a 15-year-old from Gravedona who races for the colors of LNI Mandello del Lario on Lake Como. Paul was in the lead before the only final round held today, in which he did not shine, still holding the third step of the podium. HERE ALL THE RANKINGS
