The ancient harbor of Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, and the mythical waters of the Solent, the arm of the sea separating the island from England known for its unique combination of winds and tides, host the UK’s most important event reserved for classic sails each year in late July, which became part of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge in 2010.
Dances opened on July 17 with a spectacular water parade to then move on to days of long and technical racing, marked by ‘slalom’ between buoys, ferries and currents.
Pints! Pints! (pints of beer!!) is the cry of the Classic Yachts crews. who arrive first at the dock after racing at Panerai British Classic Week, held July 16-23 in Cowes, England, on the Isle of Wight. A very challenging week of racing, in which 61 boats participated, which showcased the sporting skills, technical preparation, quality of sailors, tactical choices and post race play habits under the watchful gaze of thousands of spectators who cheered on the shores of the Medina River estuary and along the island’s coastline.
After a week of racing these are the winners of the various classes:
- Class 1 Modern Classic: FLIGHT OF UFFORD. Spirit 52′
- Class 2 Classic: WHOOPER. One Off
- Class 3 Classic: MIKADO. Fife Bermudian Cutter
- Class 4 Classic: CERESTE. Sussex Yacht
- 20 feet: ST KITTS by Robin Richardson
- 8 meters: SASKIA by Murdoch McKillop
