Phaedo 3 eventually prevailed after a thrilling duel against Maserati and Giovanni Soldini’s crew. The American Multi 70 finished the RORC Carribean 600 in 33 hours, 40 minutes and 44 seconds. About 13 minutes later it was the turn of Maserati, which suffered the final stretch by Phaedo 3 after having sailed most of the race in contact, with a gap of a few hundred meters.
For Giovanni Soldini and his crew, another step forward in the development and fine-tuning of the boat. A path that was known to be difficult, given the complexity of the new medium. It should be noted that the likes of Brian Thompson and Michel Desjoyeaux were racing on Phaedo 3, a fact that certifies how difficult Maserati’s challenge to the opposing dream team was.
Weather conditions were also decisive in part: the light wind favored Phaedo 3’s traditional daggerboard set-up, rather than Maserati’s foils, which nonetheless showed their effectiveness in the most intense wind phases. In fact, there were several overtakes along the way.
For Giovanni Soldini and his crew, therefore, the third official racing engagement aboard Maserati goes positively into the archives, awaiting new oceanic challenges.
