Being the fastest in the fleet is not always an advantage. Especially if you, an 88-foot bolide, are so far ahead of the rest of the boats that you are taking part–literally–in another race. This happened to Rambler, George David’s superboat, 27 meters in length and a crew of 20 America’s Cup and World Tour champions, at the 2016 Palermo Monte Carlo (the busiest ever with 57 boats at the start).
FAST, BUT IN ANOTHER RACE!
The Juan Kouyoumdjian-designed boat won in real time, taking 58 hours to complete the 500-mile course: “Maybe a little too much to do 500 miles,” David said, “but we were affected by a couple of stops (the first afternoon after passing Ustica and the second night going up Corsica). The wind turned, first from the north and then from the south. Overall a really good regatta.”
THE YOUNGEST ADVANTAGED
While Rambler suffered from a lack of wind, the rest of the fleet, on the other hand, ran into a strong disturbance that hit Sardinia hard on the second night of sailing. This caused a dozen boats to retire, including Extra 1 of Sicilian owner Massimo Barranco with Matteo Ivaldi aboard, given as one of the favorites on the eve of the race and winner of the 2015 edition. But it obviously favored the smaller boats in terms of winning on handicap time.
SUPER BE WILD
“Those who have always considered the Palermo-Montecarlo to be a regatta with little wind will have to think again this time,” said Be Wild owner Renzo Grottesi. “We took a lot of wind, all upwind, for 15 hours. The boat went very strong and the crew worked well. It was a beautiful regatta.” Be Wild, a new Swan 42, is one of the candidates to win on corrected time and also won the Italian Offshore Championship, which put twice as many points up for grabs here as in other circuit races, a testament to its complexity. Crucial on board was the contribution of ocean navigator Andrea Caracci, the only “foreigner” (as a Genoese) in a crew composed mainly of a group of close-knit Ancona sailors.
