The advent of stoppers among sailing equipment radically changed deck plans. Today, thanks to this accessory, on even good-sized boats, two winches alone are enough to control all maneuvers. Excluding those on the genoa sheets.
In fact, the function of the stopper is to block the maneuver upstream of the winch, freeing the winch itself from the line once it is tensioned. And so stoppers proliferate on deck.
