It will be shown to the public for the first time at the Genoa Boat Show (Sept. 20-25), but it is already making waves: it is called SPP (an acronym for Steerable Propulsion Pod), the new system that promises to make it easier for sailors to maneuver in harbor by making the boat much more steerable in restricted waters (and in fact, say “goodbye” to the bow thruster). The pod was developed by Yanmar Marine in partnership with ZF and consists of a steerable propulsion foot at the top of which the propeller “works.” The foot, installed aft in the submerged part of the hull, is coupled to the Yanmar inboard engine by means of a flange.
JOYSTICK ARRIVES EVEN ON SMALL SAILBOATS
Using the joystick installed in the dashboard, the boat is steered completely independently of the engine linkages. Hull response is quick as well as easy and intuitive is the approach to the joystick even for the less experienced owner. The system, designed to operate when the hull is sailing at a reduced speed, is controlled by an electronic control unit that can manage and adjust the thruster rpm according to the pressure exerted on the joystick and interacts with the rotational movement of the foot itself.
EASY EVEN IN RETROFIT
The control unit also performs continuous check for proper operation of the apparatus and can be interfaced with the on-board GPS for proper stationing of the vessel. SPP is easily installed on Yanmar Marine engines to 80hp rating. The parent company has already started marketing the system, which is covered by the two-year warranty. www.yanmaritalia.it
