The winner of the 2001 and 2009 Vendée Globe (the nonstop solo round-the-world race) — the only one to succeed twice — was born in Concarneau, Brittany, on July 16, 1965. The son of one of the founders of the Glénans sailing school, as a child he spent more time on dinghies than in school desks. He soon joined the crew of his countryman Eric Tabarly, then, at the age of 20, the big leap: again with Tabarly, he participated in the Whitbread (round-the-world crew ride).
After winning the Vendée Globe in 2001, his career as a lone seafarer never stopped: he won the Route du Rhum in 2002, the Ostar in 2004, the Solitaire du Figaro three times, and the Vendée again in 2009. A life devoted to sailing: the few times he is ashore, he teaches offshore sailing.
Why: “Le Professeur” is the only sailor to have won the Vendée Globe twice, in 2001 on PRB and in 2009 with Foncia.
