A fully autonomous trimaran, capable of sailing without anyone on board and in complete energy self-sufficiency. Named MARS (an acronym for Mayflower Autonomous Research Ship), it will be 32.5 meters long and 16.8 meters wide and will sail by harnessing the wind (thanks to a double sail) and the sun (with a hi-tech photovoltaic panel system).
TOTAL SELF-SUFFICIENCY
The sails will be able to propel the trimaran up to a speed of 20 knots, while in calm weather the solar panel-powered engine will be able to take the trimaran up to 12.5 knots. Should the boat travel by motor at 5 knots, the solar cells (which extend by 40 percent in calm seas thanks to a folding system) would give it infinite autonomy. On board only drones of different types to conduct experiments while sailing.
WHEN WILL WE SEE IT IN ACTION?
The launching of MARS, a project of the University of Plymouth in collaboration with experts from MSubs (a company specializing in autonomous vehicles and boats) and Shuttleworth Design), is planned for 2019, and after a year of testing the first navigation will take place: from Plymouth (UK) to Plymouth (Massachusetts), just 400 years after the mythical voyage, on the same Mayflower route.
