The 2017-2018 Volvo Ocean Race is still a long way off, but for one of the inscribed teams, the challenge is already uphill. Mapfre, the Spanish crew that will also take part in the next Volvo, dismasted during a training session in Spain near its base in Sansxenxo. The broken mast is one that has already competed in the 2014-2015 Volvo Ocean Race and thus already had a completed round-the-world race under its belt.

The Spaniards were training in 25 knots and about 4 meters of wave, optimal conditions for a team preparing for the Volvo Ocean Race. This is the second VOR 65 mast to break, the first being Dongfeng’s in the Cape Horn leg. Inconveniences of this kind have radically decreased since the adoption of the One design, although the overall spectacle and performance of the boats have declined.
