When we were invited to the first Sail Summit last year, in Milan, Italy, we were a bit skeptical: we were afraid that the formula, which involves a series of thematic lectures given by big experts (and big names) in sailing, university-style, would end up boring us.
We were wrong, and big time. It turned out to be a very informative, entertaining and never boring experience-even when going into the details of the topics-and above all a nice way for participants to get to know each other, exchange views and opinions, and seek advice from the great experts “in the chair.” In short, in the middle of the Po Valley we breathed salt air.
SAILING NEWSPAPER IS MEDIA PARTNER OF SAIL SUMMIT
So this year we contacted Sergio Frattaruolo, ocean sailor who is the “deus ex machina” of the Sail Summit, sealing the media-partnership of the event, scheduled for March 14 and 15 at the Novotel Milano Nord Ca’ Granda (Viale Giovanni Suzzani, 13). Our editorial staff will be present at the Sail Summit and we will give extensive coverage: in addition, all Sail Summit participants will receive a complimentary copy of the Sail Newspaper.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
What are the best techniques for safe surfing? With what tools? How to handle an accident at sea? How best to choose, adjust, maintain sails, even asymmetric sails? How is a boat built? What are the things to know about masts and rigging? And more: board shifts and sleep, how to manage them? All these questions-and many more-will be answered in the second edition of Sail Summit, the intensive course where you will learn, thanks to exceptional “lecturers,” all the secrets of your sailboat.
The “deus ex machina” of this edition, which is divided into seminars and has many new features, is skipper Sergio Frattaruolo: so many miles behind him, including solo, he has a sailing school based in Portugal where he runs safety and sailing courses between Lisbon and Portugal on a Class 40.
“The motto of the course,” Frattaruolo tells us, “is the same as last year: Knowledge = Safety. The feedback from the last edition – 160 registrants – was fantastic, we received so many messages of congratulations and appreciation. This feedback prompted me to do even better and seek new and increasingly important speakers. This year we have a dream team, which is likely to be enriched again.” Here are who the teachers will be.
SAIL SUMMIT 2020 LECTURERS
The safety and on-board electronics part will be taken care of by Frattaruolo, whose resume is worth mentioning: in 2011 he participated in the MiniTransat, and in 2012 he participated in the Global Ocean Race, the round-the-world double race on Class 40s. In 2013 he founded Extreme Sailing Academy, an ocean sailing school; in 2015 he won the world record on the Discovery Route. Ha He has been involved in new technologies for more than 20 years, and for the past 10 in particular in technologies in the nautical and security fields. He sailed 70,000 miles, a good portion of which he sailed solo.
Let’s come to sails, foils and spinnakers. The expert in the chair will be Paolo Semeraro, CEO and Founder of Banks Sail Europe and Neo Yachts. Strong sailor who has two Olympics, an America’s Cup and dozens of national and international titles to his credit.
Boat-building techniques will be covered by Pierpaolo Ballerini, engineer and founder of Azuree Shipyard: a leading expert in technology and processes for the marine industry. He has collaborated with major yacht shipyards, both motor and sailing. He is currently working in collaboration with Nautor’s Swan. He is also a sailor, passionate about long solo or double-handed racing
You’ll learn all the secrets of your mast from Iacopo Savi, director of OSN Yacht Rigging-Jacopo has rigged thousands of boats.
Plus, a true international “star” when it comes to sleep management on board: Dr. Claudio Stampi. Bolognese physician known worldwide as “Doctor Sleep,” a worldwide guru of sleep cycle optimization, specializing in biomedical engineering, neurology and founder of the Chronobiology Research Institute in Boston. Stampi has taught generations of sailors, athletes, astronauts, and top managers around the world how to best manage sleep to maximize their performance.
And the list, between now and March, may lengthen with other important names.
“All seminars,” Frattaruolo continued, “are aimed at the owner and the ‘average sailor’ who is hungry for real knowledge and not dockside legends. In addition, in this edition we will devote more time to “socializing”: for example, on Saturday the 14th, after the seminars, there will be “Four chats on the dock,” a time to get to know the speakers better and exchange views, questions, opinions from sailor to sailor.”
