By far, the fastest for now is Loïck Peyron, who with Banque Populaire V in 2012 crewed around the world in just 45 days, 13 hours, 42 minutes and 53 seconds, winning the Jules Verne Trophy (starting from the island of Ouessant, Brittany and circumnavigating the world via the Cape of Good Hope Leeuwin and Horn). They tried to beat him: the last was Thomas Coville who, however, had to retire almost immediately with his Sodebo. And now the Swiss are trying with the 40-meter maxi-trimaran Spindrift 2. Indeed, Dona Bertarelli and partner Yann Guichard have announced the crew with which they will attempt to break Peyron’s record.
THE ELECTED.
Left to right, top row. Thierry Duprey du Vorsent, Thomas Rouxel, Sébastien Audigane, Antoine Carraz, Sébastien Marsset, Xavier Revil, François Morvan. From left to right, bottom row: Yann Riou, Dona Bertarelli, Yann Guichard, Jacques Guichard, Christophe Espagnon, Erwan Israël, and Loïc Le Mignon (who is not pictured). They are the chosen ones. As of October 19, they will officially be on standby waiting for the right weather window to start.
JAMES BOND TECHNOLOGY TO BEAT PEYRON
Peyron’s time, to be beaten, requires a hyper-technological bolide worthy of James Bond. Here, then, is the new 42-meter carbon mast (25 percent lighter than its predecessor), a new set of sails, deck equipment stripped down to the bone, and a limiting of weights to the manic underdeck (for example, all sail bags have been changed coming in at a savings of 35 kg). It will be a good challenge.
