After the withdrawals of Edmond De Rothschild’s Sebastien Josse and Charles Caudrelier and Safran’s Morgan Lagravière and Nicolas Lunven among the IMOCA 60, it is now Hugo Boss’ turn: Alex Thomson and Guillermo Altadill, after leading the Transat Jacques Vabre, are heading to Vigo, Spain, due to a breakdown. The conditions, yes, are tough.
THREE OUT OF FIVE ARE OUT
But out of the five new generation Open 60s (designed by VPLP/Verdier) equipped with foils, as many as three are out of the race. The other two are Banque Populaire VIII of Armel Le Cleac’h and Erwan Tabarly, in third place, and Virbac Paprec of Jean-Pierre Dick and Fabien Delahaye, in 11th. The regatta is still long and everything can change, but let’s not hide behind a finger: maybe everyone expected more from the new boats…
INEXPERIENCE? NO.
What does this mean? Certainly not inexperience on the part of the sailors: Josse, Caudrelier,, Lagravière and Lunven are very important names in ocean sailing. Even Thimson and Altadill participated in the previous Transat Jacques Vabre four years ago, arriving in 16 days and 9 hours and finishing second on the podium. Indeed, it was precisely experience and wisdom that played an important part: preserving boats in view of upcoming engagements (especially the Vendée Globe) rather than stubbornly and end up doing irreparable damage Perhaps you pushed too hard on the accelerator, the boats (lighter and able to reach higher speeds above 20 knots) need to be broken in and strengthened. What do you think?
