The “excuse” is 45 years in business, which the legendary American shipyard J/Boats celebrates in 2021: there could be no better occasion to launch a 45-footer, which will become thebrand’s flagship and mark J’s return to the world of cruising, albeit performance cruising. A decidedly different boat from her younger sisters J112 and J122, with much more contemporary lines (starting with the vertical stern starboard and slightly inverted bow starboard, with integrated dolphin guard). Here are the very first renderings.

Philosophy

The idea behind the J/45 (13.85 m x 4.25 m, the first specimen will be launched late next spring) is to offer a “third way” to owners undecided between performance-oriented technical boats or designed for uncompromising comfort, even at the expense of performance.

The synthesis between the American pragmatism of J Boats (design) and the French taste of J Composites (construction using the sandwich infusion technique) really took on its full meaning in the J/45. It took more than 3 years of collaborative work, mulling over every detail in the constant search for the best possible balance.

The guiding principle was to maximize interior volume and comfort, while maintaining a sleek silhouette, minimal wetted surface area, and far lower weight estimate than hulls of similar class (9.9 tons is the expected displacement). The interior design was entrusted to Isabelle Racoupeau, who worked to allow natural light to accentuate a distinctly modern design marked by comfort and functionality.

Comfort, speed, safety

Usually, light displacement is not well matched with cruising comfort and stowage space for crew equipment and supplies. In this case, the choice of a more moderate displacement with a 40% ballast ratio and a streamlined sail plan fits perfectly with the vision of cruising according to J. A fast cruise made up of lots of sailing, because speed is a key factor in safety.

Not to mention solid construction: all bulkheads and rigging have additional bonding to the hull and deck, providing the J/45 with increased rigidity and with it the ability to cope with all seas and conditions. Standard equipment and fittings are of the highest quality, and the organization of maneuvers on deck and in the cockpit makes it easy to sail with a small crew.

Internal layouts

The J/45 boasts several layout options, a version with 2 cabins / 2 large head compartments and a sail locker or a 3-cabin variant with the option of a twin cabin.

The interior finish is available with three wood choices, oak, walnut or teak. Further customization will also be possible on the J/45 thanks to a very wide range of high-end upholstery.
