The highlight event of the season is about to turn on the green light, and there are 57 boats on the starting line, pawing at the starting line: we are talking about theItalian ORC in Gaeta, staged August 25-29. An event strongly supported by UVAI and FIV, marking the return of offshore comp regattas to Italy and, as every year, will award the sailing championships.
There are many reasons to be interested in the championship: it is a first major event after the lockdown, and on the water will be some of Italy’s best prepared crews competing on one of Italy’s most beautiful race courses with conditions that could promise spectacle. With only a few days to go before the start, there are 57 entries, which will be divided as usual into two groups based on rating and boat length.
FAVORITES.
Difficult to make a list of favorites for the title since there are so many competitive boats on paper. Starting with the large group there is curiosity to see the debut of John Di Vincenzo’s Ker 43 Lisa. A boat certainly better suited to offshore racing than ORC racing between the buoys, but certainly very fast. The two TP 52s, Macchia Mediterranea and Airis is Blue, are the favorites to lead the fleet in real time, but they will have to watch their backs in compensated time from a “pack” of Swan 42s that like hunting dogs will chase the trails of the TPs. Mela, Be Wild, Spirit of Nerina, Katariina II, Selene Alifax, are the special observers.
In Group B, reserved for grades 3 and 4, the balance if possible is even greater. Eyes focused here on the large presence of Italia Yachts. With three 11.98s (Guardamago, Sugar 3 currently ORC world champion and Scugnizza)and two 9.98s (Sarchiapone and Un po per Gioco), the Venice shipyard is definitely aiming for the title. Who can meddle in the hunt for the shield? Definitely the Este 31 Globulo Rosso, a local boat, which in the Gaeta field can absolutely have its say as well as its twin Locura. Surprises may come from the many X-35s present, an evergreen boat, or from the other small boats in the race such as the First 35 South Kensington.
The wait is over, now it is time to race.
